Valence Electrons

Today, we first went over our test. I attempted to show the students how to answer each question and connect each question to a piece of classwork that we completed earlier. Some of the students that struggled had some misconceptions that we tried to talk through. The information on this test will be covered again on our upcoming test, so students will be able to show their mastery later if they make improvements in the meantime.

In the second half of the class, we covered the Bohr model of the atom and the electron shells that were the basis for chemical understanding before quantum theory gained hold. This is a simplified form of electron formation that should make the fundamentals of chemistry easier to understand for our students while still communicating the most important parts of why chemical reactions occur.

The students finished by completing dot diagrams for a series of atoms to show the number of valence electrons.
